About GM
For more than three decades, GM Coachwork has been at the forefront of minibus design, engineering, and conversion. Since 1988, we’ve specialised in creating bespoke minibuses and wheelchair accessible vehicles tailored for community transport groups, care providers, schools, and charities across the UK.
Our story
GM Coachwork began in the late 1980s, when founder and CEO David Vooght followed his ambition to build a business that combined precision engineering with purpose-driven design. After completing an engineering apprenticeship at Westland Helicopters, David joined his father-in-law, who was already producing high-quality minibus conversions under the GM name. David soon took over the company and began to expand its capabilities. In its early years, GM focused primarily on minibus conversions, pioneering innovations such as the first coachbuilt low-floor Ford Transit.
The 1990s saw further breakthroughs, including the first taxi with a sliding seat, and in 2010, GM launched the Minibus Lite, a revolutionary lightweight vehicle that transformed community and school transport.
Trusted to convert vehicles from leading manufacturers.
The Minibus Lite changed the landscape of accessible transport. By allowing drivers to operate a 17-seat minibus on a standard car licence, it removed the need for D1 licence entitlement, a major advantage for schools and organisations.
In 2019, GM embraced the future of sustainable transport with the launch of the LDV EV80, the UK’s first fully electric minibus. As a converter that has always led from the front, GM continues to innovate, developing the next generation of accessible, efficient, and environmentally friendly minibuses to meet the evolving needs of our customers and communities.
